Woodpeckers 1281 Precision Woodworking Square - 12" X 8"

Success in the workshop depends on careful machinery set up, accurate layout and consistently checking your work during assembly. All three jobs call for a quality square, and here is the one that established Woodpeckers as a premier layout tool manufacturer, the 1281 Precision Woodworking Square.  What separates Woodpeckers squares from the rest is our one-piece central core, milled from the most stable aluminum plate made in the world. The central core gives the 1281 an accuracy and stability not found in competitive tools.

Cleverly Designed and Carefully Manufactured

The core of the 1281 is a precisely machined square milled from cast and ground tool plate…the most stable aluminum in the world. The stability of the material and the methods we use to machine the core allow us to hold tolerance to ±.0085°…that’s within one thousandth of an inch at the far end of the 12-inch blade. To this highly accurate core, we add cheeks to make the base thicker. The combination of the one-piece core with the precision-pinned cheeks can’t be matched by squares made with a blade riveted to a separate beam.

The cheeks are narrower than the core by a quarter-inch, forming a shoulder not found in traditional square designs. The shoulder allows the square to rest on the edge of a board without you holding on. Once you’ve used a Woodpeckers square with the shoulder, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

The hands-free design, the wide stable base for vertical use and the heft and balance of the 1281 combine to make the tool a joy to use, as well as deadly accurate. But we didn’t stop with just a great square, we laser engrave scales on both sides of the blade (inch or metric, your choice) to an accuracy of ±.004" total accumulated error over the entire length of the scale.

When the job is done, your 1281 stores in a wall-mountable case that keeps it safe, but always in plain sight and ready for the next project.

We take great pride in the design and manufacturing of these squares. So much so that we will repair or replace your 1281 anytime you find it to be out of tolerance. No fine print, no disclaimers. If it’s not square, we’ll make it square or replace it.

Squares - FAQ

Q: What is the difference between the Aluminum and Stainless Steel squares besides material?

A: The biggest difference besides the material the squares are made out of is the marking holes that are milled into the stainless steel squares that are not milled in the aluminum versions.  These holes allow for marking layout lines for projects. The Stainless Steel Square blade is approximately 1/16” in thickness where the Aluminum blade is approximately ⅛”.  The thinner blade and the marking holes along the blade of the Stainless Steel Square allows for it to be better used for lay out lines.  The thicker blade of the Aluminum Square is better suited for making sure work pieces are perpendicular to each other.

Q: How accurate are your squares compared to others on the market?

A: Our squares are milled and inspected to be within tolerances of .001” per foot or .0085°.

Q: When the 1281R square is laid on its side the pins stick out - does this mean something is wrong?

A: No, nothing is wrong with your square.  These pins are press fitted in and will stIck out on one side.  The other side should be flush to the cheeks.  If the pins are not flush on either side please contact us at 440-238-1918 Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm EST or email us at mailroom@woodpeck.com to get a repair started for your tool.
