You can use commercially available templates or make your own custom templates. The beauty of template work with a pattern bit is that there's no offset to contend with (unlike using a router-mounted template guide bushing). Whatever size and shape your template, that's exactly what your project will look like. 

Beyond cutting to a template, bowl bits can be used to extend the depth of any recess in your stock. For instance, drill a hole with a Forstner bit and you have an ugly center point and a tiny sharp groove around the perimeter. But a quick cut with a bowl bit gives you a clean radius around the perimeter and erases the center spur hole. 

But you don't have to rely on the bearing of the bowl bit. You can machine beautiful, softened grooves with an edge guide, track system or your router table. 

Ultra-Shear borrowed a technique from metal-cutting tool companies to merge solid carbide spiral cutting efficiency with steel shank economy. Our "Carbide Head" bits have a solid carbide blank brazed to a steel shank. After the head is brazed on, the 3-flute spiral cutting pattern is ground to shape, just like our solid carbide spirals. But we don't have to tie up the machines with turning down the shank, and less machine time means lower prices for you. The result is spiral cutting performance at prices that compete with carbide tipped bits.

The difference between the 3 Compact Bowl Bits is the corner radius between the sidewall and the bottom. You have your choice of 1/16", 1/8" or 3/16".  All have a 3/8" cut length. Pick just the ones you need or save some money with the complete set.
